The aim of the Kanji Reader is to help you better learn kanji, i.e. the Sino-Japanese ideographs used in the Japanese writing system. With around 3,000 Kanji embedded in the Kanji Reader, you can read most of the kanji in your books, magazines or even manga.

What are Kanji?

Kanji are the adapted Chinese characters - the heart of the Japanese writing system.  The Japanese language counts around 6,000 Kanji in usage but only 3,000 are commonly used in every day life. That means that there are indeed 3,000 characters to know if you want to read Japanese as a Japanese person. However, only 1,945 Kanji are enough if you want to read most of what you will encounter when living in Japan.
Still, the learning of Kanji is quite a huge labor for any Japanese as a second language learner who wants to tackle the Japanese writing system. To help with that,  many well-compiled dictionaries and reference books exist for leaning them...but this takes so much time! Just imagine, when  reading a Japanese book if you have to stop each you encounter an unknown Kanji character or compound (usually Kanji are associated with other Kanji for expressing a word or concept), you will soon get bored with that drudgery.

Fortunately, Japan21, a Japanese high-technology company finally created THE tool for every Kanji learner (and by extension of course every student of Japanese) : the Kanji Reader.
Scroll the pen over your unknown Kanji, and see the pronunciation and meaning!

Although the Kanji Reader is basically aimed at those who have reached at least the intermediate level of Japanese, the Kanji Reader can be also very useful for beginners. Indeed, the Kanji Reader can also read the other syllabaries also widely used in Japan: the Kana. Consisting of the Hiragana and Katakana systems, Kana are mainly used in books for beginners in place of the Kanji characters or for certain imported words. To sum up, you can also use the Kanji Reader to scan words in Kana and see their meaning in English.
